The Ride / Bilan de la course

In November, I solicited the help of all my cooking buddies in the blogosphere and launched the Energy Food Challenge for my mom's 109 mile ride to raise money for blood cancers. I had been waiting for her to send me some photos so I could give you all a proper update! So finally, as part of starting out 2009 right, here's the story.

My mom rode 53 miles, took a bit of a spill, nothing too nasty but she scraped up her leg and accepted a booster ride of 25 miles. Then she rode the last 31 miles to finish with her team, for a total of 84 miles in about 9 hours of riding! Here she is at the finish line with a Hershey's kiss on her helmet (because they're the team from Central PA where Hershey's chocolate is made):

It actually worked out well because if you're not done by dark, they come pick you up wherever you are and she was glad that didn't happen to her and she got to cross the finish line. The day was a big success: Team in Training nationally raised over 1 million dollars!

That's so great! I have always wanted to participate in an event like that, but always worry I don't have the stamina. Such a great thing!

Thank you so much Hopie for sharing my adventure with your blog readers. And thank you for the nutritious and delicious recipes sent along by friends and fellow adventurers, both in cooking and in cycling! Since I was staying in a hotel I couldn't prepare my own foods the day of the event, but I remembered the ingredients and went for bananas and peanut butter and oatmeal at the hotel breakfast buffet! It truly was a wonderful experience and made all the more so by the warm support from all around the world. Thank you and keep on pedaling (and/or cooking)!
